Yes, I believe in this. That is why, I am against capital punishment. but now I favour life sentence (till the person dies) only for the worst crimes including the one in Delhi.
A minor girl from Sri Lanka was beheaded when the child she was looking after choked to death. Is not not so harsh punishment!

I think this will help reduce the occurance of crime. It has reduced in Arab world, so why not here too ?

If there are no punishment then rich mighty and people in power will do anything
although forgiveness is better but in practical terms to keep society free of oppression and crime , punishments are to be given as it is useful for maintaining good societies
