North India too has produced many great scientists : Sir Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar, Prof Birbal Sahny, Dr Hargobind Khorana, Satish Dhawan, Kalpna Chawla. These are some of the names that have struck my mind instantaneously.

Seeking highly qualified salaries has been the benchmark of SOuth India since time immemorial. Even in our various dynasties, if u look at the top treasury managers- they were SOuth Indian. Not all demographies need to share seeking highly qualified salaries as a social progress trait.
How's about DElhi....the epicenter of HIndi belt....although Delhi wallah's didn't strike a chord as far as education goes worldwide, I can most certainly mention the word "Delhi electricals" in far off Manila or far off Bangkok and people would know what I'm talking about. If u say "Madras electricals" the ppl would blink. Just as South Indians made a unique niche for themselfs in the field of education, our comrades in DElhi share the distinction of being the only group of people who r able to compete on equal terms in electricals business wise w/ the Chinese.
Likewise , if u say "Agra shoes" people frm as far as the Democratic Republic of Congo can understand it....and it has a trademark of be ...more

Dear madam, I am a bit pained to see your question specifically in the end part where you have asked why there is no such development in the North India especially in the Hindi Belt.
I am to agree with your opinion on the value of education and practice of physics and mathematics in South India.
I myself is a student of physics. In my under graduate / post graduate studies, the name of Dr. C.V. Raman figured so often and so prominently that we used to boast of, in the international symposiums held in our university before international participants. Bose _ Einstein field and Raman Effect were trump cards in our Novice arguments. Do you know who is this Bose? He is Dr. Satyendra Nath Bose. Have you heard of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, who should have been recognised as the inventor of Radio and wireless system instead of Marconi of Italy. The leading Physics research Laboratory in Kolkata, the Bose Institute is in his name. If you are a physics student you must be knowing this ...more

One cannot generalise this aspect as genius is not cultivated in the soil...but in the human brain which is more related to intellect rather than the genes.
If Dr C V Raman came from South India he dint ever boast of his origin in his Photoelectricity paper. And neither did Dr Meghnad Saha and Satyendra nath Bose boast in their papers on Astrophysics n Particle physics respectively about their origin.
So why cant we just think of them as great Indian Geniuses who won Nobel for their extraordinary work in the field of science.
