Mesmerism is essentially the same as hypnosis, the word mesmerism is a lot older than hynosis,and was packed with substantial misconceptions in the time it was used , which was the reason to change it, Mesmerism comes from the last name of the Austrian physician Franz Anton Mesmer, who was the first to practice what we call hypnosis today, hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, It happens when a state of mind is achieved in which suggestions alter someone's awareness,memory or thinking in a way that the hypnotised person responds to the alteration as if it were a reality,It is supposed to be done with a specific, clear short-term aim-- to get to the bottom of something that the patient is not able to bring to mind or to consciously stop doing, hypnosis (mesmerism) is not a form of sleep but concentration that bypasses the usual critical or evaluative activities of the mind to get to underlying factors, The patient becomes much more open to suggestion and guidance --not so m ...more

Mesmerism is controlling of others mind by hypnotism discovered by Mesmer and is called as mesmerism by his name after him!

A system of healing developed by F.A. Mesmer, involving the induction of trance states and the supposed transfer of animal magnetism. People in Mesmeric trance often showed paranormal abilities such as clairvoyance.

Mesmerism is a bit of medical quackery developed in the 1806 Sibly18th century by the German physician Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815). In 1766, he published his doctoral dissertation on how the planets affect health: De planetarum influxu in corpus humanum (On the Influence of the Planets on the Human Body). The work was not original, but largely plagiarized (Pattie 1994). Nevertheless, it satisfied the faculty at the University of Vienna.
