No doubt Hrishikesh Mukherjee is most successful director but my vote goes for Bimal Roy for his mind boggling classics like Bandini, Madhumati, Parakh , Devdas , Pareeneta , Do Bigha Zamin, Biraj Bahu, , Sujata,.......real feast of eyes , mind and soul

Though all of them were great in their own productions and direction but if at all a comparison is to be made I would rate Bimal Roy as no.1 foloowed by Guru Dutt, then Hrishikesh Mukherjee and then Raj kapoor.

Bimal Roy.who began as a cameraman for New Theatres studio in Calcutta and moved to Bombay in 1951 to achieve iconic status as one of India's foremost directors during the "golden age" of Indian cinema.
His socialistic realism on the human degradation.the divide between classesbetween rich and poor. low and high caste the inhuman face of industrialization and the changing social order was a new approach in Hindi cinema.
Bimal Roy introduced realism to Indian cinema & was the first Indian film maker to gain international acclaim, winning awards at festivals such as Cannes. long before Satyajit Ray made his mark in world cinema.
