As of now there is now there aren't enough data to conclude that distant stars affects the life on earth. However our nearest star that is the sun dose affect our life. By providing or withholding its heat and light it controls our life itself. However what is said as stars controlling our life in Astrological predictions is all hum bug. There is no scientific data available as yet to proove the prediction. Predictions are generalised guess work and good entertainment and should not be taken seriously.

It is a debatable point, since some people believe in it, while some do not.
