Because they cannot live with their guilty conscience, and try to justify their actions in their mind. Truth is that you cannot have your cake and eat it - if a person is involved in an extra marital relationship then they are anything but loyal.

Yes, while in a relationships of infidelity , people still want to be loyal to their spouses as they feel a natural sense of Responsibikty of having tied in the knot of marriage.
You see, daily routine existence of spouses in life is a matter of habit, u can't keep ur face away from that. Moreover a guilt feeling might be working.
So it is best, ( in my opinion), that both the spouses they engage themselves in Infidelity.
Human nature is that they r not happy what they get. We always find fault with our ownings. Others' wife is good, others' husband is good, others' children r good, others' house is good etc. This feeling of dissatisfaction leads a person to have extramarital relationship. When they enjoy extramarital relationship, they feel it prudent to show loyalty to their spouses as an xtra gift to them. It is nothing but drama. But we are here in life with a script of Drama only !

The going back to the spouce after digging through the dustbins is not loyalty but a disloyalty covered up as loyalty. Loyalty cannot stand even a single deviagtion. Dharmas's telling even a half truth(naro wa kunjro wa) permanently grounded his chariot for life. No even Krishna's intercesion save him from it.So go ,dig through all the dustbins inthe town but when you come back home do not delude yourself it is loyalty. You are onlyh deceiving yourself. The way to hell is made up of self-deceptions
