We always t hink in terms of our native language though we may communicate the thoughts in other languages we may know. However, the initial mould is the nativve tongue. A tale is told of a linquist coming to the court of the Peshwas. He was so fluent in so manmy language that it was difficult tomeet his challange to recognise his native tongue. Nana Phadanwees accepted the challange. He slipped in the room where the man was fast aleep and threw drops cold water on his face. The man started up say 'Oh, who is there? What are you doing' The words came in chaste Gujrathi (Shoo, bhai, kem karyo) Nana quitely slipped away and when they met inthe durbar next day he told the challanger that he was a Gujju which he admitted. This human tendency to think in native language is many a time a handicaap for assimmilating other language. You must have makrfed the South Indian speaking fluent Englishbut in Tamilian/Telugu/Malyalam tones and a Pujabi in Gurumukhu diction.
