What do we comment on a Dept that has been incompetent from the time of its inception. Do you remember, the AIR Weather reports in the 70s or even in the 80s when DD had sole rights for to announce such momentous predictions. Earlier, the only qualification to be a weather forecaster was to have the ability of "Divine Premonitions", for it alone was the sole aid for them to come to any conclusions. Those were the days, when everything was left to God, for the equipments were always obsolete, vintage ones, which never had any maintenance and if it worked, they would sign with relief just as the farmer would do seeing the first signs of cloud formation. Even those weather balloons that were sent up were more like the ones which are sent up during the Kite festivals.

Technology has changed, but has anything really changed with any of these Govt. run departments? Have you ever had a miserable experience at the Delhi airport when you have to fly out and he has to stamp your passport? I ...more

Raj there is an old saying that "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute as it will change." So its really a tough task to predict weather 100% correctly.Weather forecasts are just to inform public in worse situations just like a case when these experts warn sailors not to go into sea with their boats.
So if the forecast fails we should not take it seriously. They are no supermen but only like us with two eyes n a brain whose memory remains out of stock because of the tough working conditions.
You know Raj our remote sensing system is one of the poor in its class n most of the instruments are not in use now n have been out of market.

Unstreadiness, they name is weather! Shakespeare could have said it(To alliterate with his famouns Frailty thy name is woman) As weather is a alternate name for unsteadiness it is futile to blame the weather bureau. Such wrong pronouncements also occured in the West .

Do youknow thatthe Weather Bureau office in Pune is called Simla Office. There is a story behind it. The bureau was originally at Simla. Thethen Viceroy was at Simla which was the summer capital of India at the time. Before going out for an evening walk he had rang up the Bureau about the weather. They had confidently predicted No rains. The sun was shining and there were no clouds, much less rain clouds. The viceroy went out without carying an umbrella. On the say he came across a shepherd wh hailed the Viceroy and told him that he should have had an umbrella as the rain was on the horizon. Viceroy, intrigied. asled him how could hesay that.'It is because my sheep are hidings their heads behjnd bushes. That is a sure ...more

Change the source of information from MeT dept. to Google. I have iGoogle as homepage on my hime comp and in office also my google is igoogle. Ihave selected 4 cities for weather. Within a span of 12 hours, their forcast is fairly accurate. They may be forecasting for next 3-4 days, which they keep on changing. So when the said day comes, the forecast changes and I have found their forecasts to be fairly acceptable with almost 97-98% accuracy level, which is acceptable.

Its not a easy task to predict d weather correctly. N if d predictioners r Indian Experts then there is no need to take it serious :).... I still remember last time when v were feverishly waiting for rain n our met experts also claimed dat there will be heavy rain in next 48 hrs... Forget 48 hrs. d rain didn't come even after 48 days..
