The great personalities like Rajendra Prasad, Radhakrishnan and Zakir Hussain became presidents before 1969. An era when the criteria for selecting the president was based on fitness of the person to occupy the post of president rather than greatness of the person on his ability to say yes to everything that the president of the party in power says. The game change was brought about by Indra Gandhi who wanted a rubber stamp president so that she can amend the constitution and laws as per her will. So starting from V V Giri all the subsequent presidents have been made to sit in Rashtrapati Bhavan on the basis of vote bank politics or to play the role of rubber stamp at the hands of the ruling party's president. Some like Abdul Kalam and K R Narayan turned out to be good in spite of being picked with ulterior motives. These are exceptions.
