This film lead the pack in the number of Academy Award nominations this year something James Cameron is very familiar with is whether or not the technology and the spectacle of the entire experience warrants this kind of critical acclaim. The film follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic former Marine whos shipped off to an alien moon, called Pandora, in order to take his brothers place as the operator of an Avatar an artificial facsimile of the NaVi, who are blue, catlike creatures that are indigenous to Pandora and attempt to convince them to relocate, so an Earth-based corporation can mine for the precious mineral that just so happens to reside under their territory. As can be expected with these kinds of films, eventually Sully and his friends start to question the ethics of what theyre doing, and begin to fight for the NaVi against their human oppressors.

Yes, its a really wonderful movie which is rarely seen these days. At least one Oscar would have been fine.

I will be frank with my answer , and i expect people to post abusive comments. I have not yet seen 'The Hurt Locker' as yet, but i saw Avatar. And it dd not strike me as something that was Oscar material.District 9 and Imglorious Basterds (2 other nominations, that i have seen ) were much better than Avatar. I will now watch Hurt Locker .

In my opinion, the awards are just an excuse to gather a bunch if celebrities in one place, so as to create an extremely expensive advertising popportunity.

Jury is the best judge for this instead of you and me commenting on movies.
