That's an interesting idea or I just can't decide between the two. Or, will depend up on situations, we have to make our own meaning, it may mean differently for different people.

It actually depends on what you and your friend(s) have been talking about to make them get that reaction. If it something serious then many have this thing to put "hmm" in their reply on to think or say to you. If it something simple then it's some sort of play or telling you that I'm thinking to make you smile at least. But, as I said, it all depends on what you guys are talking about in your chat and how you react.
