Kartikeya is the War god in the Hindu equivalent of the Roman god Ares of Mars in the Greek mythology, According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Kartikeya is the second son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is brother of Lord Ganesha. He is known by many names Subramaniam, Sanmukha, Shadanana, Skanda and Guha. In South India, esp in Tamil Nadu, Kartikeya is a popular deity and is better known as Murugan.

'son of Krittika' AND ANOTHER THING The sparks of the fiery seed of Shiva transported by the river Ganga into the Saravana forest into a pond called the Saravana Poigai -- here the sparks became six children. They were raised by the six Krittika or Kartika the stars that make up the Pleiades, earning the name Karthikeya. Parvati combined these six babies into one with six faces, that is also another meaning for this name.

Murugan also called Kartikeya, Skanda and Subrahmanya, is a popular Hindu deity especially among Tamil Hindus, worshipped primarily in areas with Tamil influence, especially South India, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mauritius and Reunion Island. His six most important shrines in India are the Arupadaiveedu temples, located in Tamil Nadu. In Sri Lanka, Hindus as well as Buddhists revere the sacred historical Nallur Kandaswamy temple in Jaffna and the sacred Buddhist and Hindu shrine or temple Katharagama (also in Sinhala "Katharagama Devalaya") dedicated to him, situated deep south in the country. Chinese in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, of Malaysia also pray to Lord Murugan during Thaipusam.
