Force is required to balance the powers and maintain the peace. If we look back, the no. of wars waged in two decades after debundling USSR is much more than during cold war period since there was no balancing force to counter NATO.

If force is used it may bring a temporary peace but there will be resentment and that can lead to more fighting at some point in the future . Only when we understand each other and accept, not tolerate, our differences can there be peace.

Well, that would be true if all were "Understanding"...which is seldom the case!
When people get impatiently greedy, ready to snatch what others have...there's hardly time for dialogue! Applying force becomes necessary to get some semblance of peace! Agreed, it could only be a temporary lull...like buying time...till better solutions can be thought out...it is nevertheless required!
Discipline or understanding, doesn't come easily. Sometimes harsh measures have to be used to make the wayward 'understand'...
Wish such an understanding could be reached between India & Pakistan over Kashmir; or between Israel and Palestine! Whatever peace is ever achieved, it is over dead bodies...
