Fund raised from share holders and then admistered or managed by team of professionals to get profit in investments.

Mutual Funds collected by desired AMC's invest in different sectors in stock market ... and make gains/losses...Its purely based on NAV(Net asset Value) keep a track of particular u invested and on the period (closed endd/openended) u can redeem

Mutual funds are set up with major objective of investing in multiple securities that can run into hundreds,it take weeks for an investor to investigate on this kind of scale ,for more information you can log on to various AMC websites like Reliance mutual fund,ICICI,HDFC and other.
