A kicker, also called a side card, is a card in a poker hand that does not itself take part in determining the rank of the hand, but that may be used to break ties between hands of the same rank. For example, the hand Q-Q-ten - five - two is ranked as a pair of queens. The ten, five, and two are kickers. This hand would defeat any hand with no pair, or with a lower-ranking pair, and lose to any higher-ranking hand. But the kickers can be used to break ties between other hands that also have a pair of queens. For example, Q-Q-K-three-two would win (because its K kicker outranks the ten), but Q-Q-ten-four-three would lose (because its four is outranked by the five).

A kicker is a card used in poker to decide ties -- for instance, if two players have a pair of Aces, who wins will be decided by who has the highest unpaired card, i.e. if one player has a pair of aces and a king, and the other has a pair of aces and a ten, the player with the king wins. The king in this case is the "kicker."

It's also used to describe the secondary card in the hole in Texas Hold'em -- for instance, if you have a ace-nine in the hole, you might say you have an ace with a nine kicker. If you had a low card with your ace, you still might be "out kicked" by another player with a higher kicker even if you end up with a pair of aces.
