The rebirth of the state of Israel in 1948. Never before has a nation been destroyed, its people dispersed to the ends of the earth, and then, nearly two thousand years later, re-gathered to their homeland and re-established as a nation.
The miracle of protection
When Israel declared itself an independent state on May 14, 1948, the armies of seven Arab nations marched on the newborn state in an effort to 'push the Jews into the sea'. Outnumbered greatly, Israel not only repelled the invaders, but acquired more of Palestine.

In this conflict Israel witnessed many 'Gideon type' interventions. A Syrian column of 200 armoured vehicles - including 45 tanks - for instance attacked Degania, the oldest kibbutz in Israel. This attack was countered with just a few obsolete howitzers. At Safed, near the Sea of Galilee, a small unit of Israeli defenders holding off thousand Arabs were helped by a sudden tropical storm that broke loose. Like the prophet Isaiah once said: "They that war against thee shall be as nothing and as a thing of nought for I will help thee." (41:12,13). During the Six Day War in 1967 Israel was being attacked again. The nation overran the combined forces of Syria, Jordan and Egypt, and took the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem, the West Bank (Samaria and Judea), and the Sinai.
