The name iPod is credited to Vinnie Chieco, a copywriter who was working with Apple's marketing team before it was released in 2001. Apple CEO Steve Jobs described the new product as a "hub," and the concept reminded Chieco of a spaceship that could send out pods which always had to come link up to the ship again later. That is essentially what you do when you sync your iPod to iTunes: return it to the mothership. The name was clinched when Chieco saw the white space-age design of the iPod and remembered a quote from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey: "Open the pod bay door, Hal!" The iPod's similarity in shape to the famous monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey coupled with the fact that it was released in 2001 makes this connection all the more interesting.

So that explains the "pod," but what about the "i"? The lower case "i" was first used in the name iMac, a colorful Apple computer that was released in 1998. Apple spokesmen claim that the "i" in iMac stood for "internet," since they ...more
