Dhan means wealth. Like a son, a daughter is also treated as wealth. In Shastras a daughter is sdescribed as Dasha putra sama kanya that means a daughter is equal to ten sons.

But this daughter is, presumed by all parents, going to be married away one day to a different boy/man. In that process the Dhan (daughter) would go to others (Paraya).Till the marriage only, the daughter is with parents. That is why the proverb PARAYA DHAN is used.

Simple "Paraya Dhan" means kisi aur ki Amanat...girls apney paretnts ke paas apney Pati ki Amanat hoti hai...we should not take literal meaning of Dhan...in traditional times ppl treat Amanat more cautiously tahn their own things....and they know one day girls will get married and go to their Husband's place..so they r being treated as Amanat or Paraya Dhan...
