Enid Blyton's stories.. Noddy tales when i was very small and when i got older used to read some Enid Blyton mystery like the Famous Five or the school series.. Mallory Towers and St.Clares etc. and gradually drift off. Later the author changed to Ayn Rand, Leon Uris, Ludlum etc.

I am not sure if I had one particular favourite bedtime story when I was little....but this question reminded me of "Big Joe's Trailer Truck" by Joe Mathieu....which is one story I know I loved in early childhood.

I also enjoyed listening to my tapes of the Winnie the Pooh stories (read by Alan Bennett, the English author and playwright) when I got a little older.

I prefer to read a short story at bedtime as a long engrossing novel may keep one up all night! Or else a chunk of factual stuff like science and semi-fictional stuff like history. My favourite collections of short stories include Conan Doyle's Holmes stories which I still enjoy reading having read them all multiple times in the last 40 years.
