Vasant Panchami marks the juncture between spring and winter and in ancient times, this day was also the first day of school for students, due to the excellent weather. In those days, the shishya, or student would leave all their belongings and live as a bhrahmchari or a hermit with their guru. The school system was much more different than today. Nowadays students begin school and end the year in 10 months for a two month break, however i those days, education was nonstop for several years and students would remain away from home the whole time. Now of course a little boy who was about to go away from his house for studies would be nervous, so to insure good results, parents and their children would invoke Saraswati ji on this day to seek Her blessings on this preliminary day of school. Soon it caught on and all Saraswati devotees began to celebrate this festival. And Yellow is important because it signifies knowledge and a new beginning.
