Maryam Jameelah, a New York Jewish girl who converted to Islam at the age of 27, and left for Pakistan the following year in 1962, had never returned to the United States.
Maryam Jameelah, formerly Margaret Marcus, converted to Islam after meeting with Abul Ala Maududi, a Pakistani Islamic scholar and the founder of Pakistani Islamist Party Jamaat-e-Islami.
Maryam Jameelah was born into a secular Jewish family, but at the age of nineteen, she developed a keen interest in religion.
At the age of 17, she wrote her first book on the life of a Palestinian refugee Ahmad Khalil.
