Protect your debit card as well as the account number, expiration date, security code on the back, and the PIN. "Even if you never lose possession of your card, someone who learns your account number, security code and PIN may be able to use that information to access your account and create counterfeit cards," said Aurelia Cardamone, an FDIC Senior Technology Specialist.

While in many cases you are not responsible for unauthorized transactions (see federal protections described later), it can be a hassle resolving the situation. Here's how to avoid becoming a victim:

Never write your PIN on or near your card. Memorize it instead.
Don't give out bank account information over the phone or the Internet unless you have initiated the contact or you know the person is who he or she claims to be. For example, beware of deceptive calls or e-mails from crooks claiming to be from your bank asking you to "verify" (divulge) your account information. "Don't fall for it," said Cardamone. "A ...more

Hi Friends,

There are few tips given below to prevent debit card fraud:

First and foremost, place a daily cash withdrawal limit on your accounts. This is the best way to protect your money and account and yet very few people know about it. You can also limit daily purchases if you want but usually fraudsters want your cash.
Keep a close eye on your account activities. Use telephone banking to check in with your account balances. You'll notice if there is money missing.
Do not use drive through debit machines. These are easily tampered with and it is hard to spot a tamper from within a car. Drive through debit machines are highly targeted for debit fraud.
Always swipe your own card. This will prevent someone swiping your card on a duplicate machine and recording your information.
Hide your pin number when you enter it on a machine. Use an envelope or your other hand to prevent cameras or people from seeing your pin number.
If a machine looks different, the keypad has a ...more

Don't use your debit card at an ATM in dark or suspicious areas.
If you must use your ATM card and someone is standing behind you, cover the pin pad when you enter your PIN number.
If the ATM takes your card DO NOT LEAVE. Call the bank immediately to report the incident.
Don't write down your pin number, especially on the back of your card.
Don't use PIN numbers that are easy for people to guess - Birth date, Birth Year - Street Number, etc.
Change your PIN number periodically.

Debit cards are a very SAFE way to spend money and get cash. In fact Debit cards are one of the safest ways of traveling with cash. It is important though to use caution whenever using your debit card just as you would when using any other method of payment. Following the above steps will help reduce your risk of debit card fraud and allow you to use your debit card safely and securely.
