There could be a number of reasons. One could genuinely be his health state where he felt he couldn't continue any more because that position entails your being put to a taxing schedule where the choice is much the Pope's because it is expected of that title.

Secondly, if reports are to be believed the internal investigation ordered by himself has brought forth the deep rot that is there in the system. There is very little he can do about it because prior to his becoming Pope and during his tenure, the system has been party to so many cover up of so many allegations including s_exual and financial. There were only two choices - either a total clean up which he is incapable of doing or to leave the scene quietly with so many unanswered questions that will remain as they are for years to come.

Otherwise, all that you can do is speculate. Of course, there is a limit to speculation too. I see some wishful thinking that is going on here. Well, there are no charges for fantasising or ...more

HOLY SEE In a shocking press conference Sunday, Pope Benedict XVI revealed to the world that he will be stepping down from the Catholic Churchs highest office. Through prayer and reflection over the past years, the worlds holiest man began, Ive realized that Allah is the one true God.
Amid clattering camera shutters and roaring reporters, Pope Benedict patiently answered questions, citing traditional Muslim folklore as well as passages from the Quran to explain his decision. His session was interrupted only once, when he swiveled South-East to face Mecca, stooped to the ground, and recited the Asr, one of the five daily prayers central to Muslim belief.
The startling reversal comes as a shock to many familiar with the Popes policies on Islam. Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached, the Bishop of the Vatican famously said of Islam in his 2006 lecture Faith, ...more

There are only three reasons I could think of to make the Pope want to resign. . Scandal.. He would like to influence the election of his successor (ensure a religious conservative with his moral, pastoral, and theological leanings is put in place) . He has lost his faith.

There is no media evidence of conversion to Islam as a reason for Pope Benedict's resign from the highest Church.....some fanatic Mullahs make it a baseless outcry for their self propagation.....In his farewell speech, the pontiff alluded to poor health, saying, In these last months I have felt that my strength had diminished and I asked God earnestly in prayer to enlighten me with His light to make me make the right decision, not for my own good, but for the good of the church. I have taken this step in full awareness of its seriousness and also its newness, but with a profound peace of mind. so the Islamic ppl are misguiding the world.... as before ....making just false and baseless rumors.....

There is no need of guesses. Church has been running institutionalised crime for ages now. It has enjoyed immunity so far. only in this information, its dark deeds such as involvement in systematic abuse of men, women and children and promoting terrorism throughout the world, colluding with criminals and all other dark deeds have been exposed. the main reason benedict stepped down was due to church's inability to satisfactorialy deal with priestly sex abuse cases, whcih are rampant throughout hte globe and on such scale that is unparalled elsewhere in history. thus by knocking down benedict and installing a new pope in his place, church has given the message that it has corrected its historical blunder. it is only posturing as true reform still eludes the church, which still continues its evil activities with impunity.
