Q.
An Expert in Rediff QNA suggested diverting of waters from the rivers of Kerala to TamilNadu on the ground that the yield of rice per acre in Kerala was only 50% of what TamilNadu produced , using the same quantity of water. The Expert also observed that Karnataka, Andhra, MP, UP and Bihar were also "wasting" water on "unproductive" agriculture, justifying diversion of waters from these States to TamilNadu. The Expert's suggestion is the best pragmatic solution to the problem of shortage of water in the State of TN. What is your opinion?

I will limit my answer to the point of diversion of Kerala waters to Tamil Nadu. Already lot of Kerala waters are diverted to TN from Parambikulam Aliyar, Mullaperiyar, etc. Many experts and right thinking people in Kerala are skeptical about possible damage and ecological imbalances indiscriminate diversion of water to TN can cause. Many experts cited danger of salinity in Kerala rivers due to reduced quantum of discharge into the sea which would endanger the crops to be irrigated and also threaten the existence many industries drawing water from these rivers. Needless to say, Kerala will face a catastrophic situation if an issue like this is not addressed in a scientific and prudent manner. Unfortunately political belligerence of some states result settling such matters in their favor thus putting other states at a very disadvantageous situation.

Why can't we think of converting sea water into drinking water.. rather than creating fights between the states? We are also having enough rains to harvest.. but the water is going to sea.
