It's really about winning. If you are in love with someone, you will do whatever it takes to win that person's love. Love and War are things to be compared and contrasted. There are no rules or restrictions in these two endevours. They are both things that bring the best and the worst out of people. They are both battles of the heart, and battles of the soul. All is fair, they cannot be controlled, they cannot be contained. All is fair in love and war: It means that the only two areas of life in which you can be forgiven for doing anything are love and war...!
