It gives you self confidence like no other. A 18 year old Western kid would have no fear about walking away from Mom and Dad's care and doing his own radical project such as making a Burma travel journal on bicycle (for example). A Westerner can live his life or her life EXACTLY as they see it.
A 18 year old Indian would be like "I have passed with 85 percent marks in +2. What courses are applicable to me" or "I didn't make it to IIT. My life is spoilt! Please help!"
This is because responsibility is imparted at a very early age in West. Kids are expected to be FULLY independent by 18 yrs and they r expected to be responsible for their own pocket money even much earlie than that.

You should also know that those that were slow to take up Western culture or couldn't take it up as fast as others were labelled "backward". So it wasn't always that others were very eager to take up Western culture but had to in order to get anywhere in life in the Western world order. An example is the British education system that was introduced in many of the former British colonies.
The advantage that is very clear is the reduction of manual labour through the introduction of modern techniques. The back side of this however is that due to lack of the discipline required to be able to physically exercise in a gym, many people are becoming overweight (through a combination of high calorie intake and lack of exercise).
