Q.

It is often said that you cannot truly love others until you are able to love yourself. But what does this mean? Does loving ourselves mean constantly saying to myself I love me? Does loving the self mean giving our self lots of presents? Does loving our self mean we become self obsessed?

Very good question sir ! It means accepting yourself before you expect other s to accept you. No human being is the same, we are all uniquely different. By loving yourself, you are actually making a kind of self introspection, looking at your positives, and negatives and converting your weaknesses into strengths. So you emerge as a better person. They say you need this first, before you love others which is true in a way. for example, if you are confident, only then can you tell others to be confident. A person who has psychological problems and nervousness cannot be expected to tell others how to lead from the front. So, by loving yourself and becoming stronger, you are in control of yourself and then you will love others better and can provide a strong shoulder for them to lean on.

In reality there is NO other ! Its just one divine principle (God) traveling from obscured consciousness to full consciousness in a multitude of ways(collection of humans) ! And it is love that connects all these paths (humans). Without love each path (each man) is an island devoid of sustenance from whole. Thats why giving and taking love becomes essential. And unless u get charged urself with love how can u connect? Love has to fill ones heart and then overflow to others.. to the whole universe !

Loving oueselves is simply being selfish. It shows the attachment. A similar feeling is necessary when we consider others.

I think it means the love should start from ourself and to spread out side. One who cannot love our own self, then it difficult to others as everything start from AHAM. :)

Major Sir Love is a feeling.
Why you want to love.If you love you feel happy .
That is selfish. For your happiness you love others.
So love starts at self.

In fact all our troubles arise from loving ourselves too much resulting in bloated ego . The word ' love ' should be replaced with " understanding ". Love and understanding are two different phenomenae . Love is heart oriented and understanding is mind oriented . We come across people who hate themselves but love their families and vice versa . Love resides in every cell of ours and we need not consciously make effort to love the self . The often quoted saying is based on wrong concepts of love and understanding .

Loving oneself means taking care of oneself which includes pure thoughts, pure actions. When this is done loving others becomes a part of it.
