The first Wimbledon championship began in 1877 as a tournament for amateurs. In 1959 Wimbledon opposed the entry of professional players. It was only in 1967 that professionals were allowed to participate for the first time.
Alex Olmedo won the championships in 1959.
In 1877 Spencer Gore won the title.
