The only reason was to stop the spread of Communism. China and North Vietnam attacked South Vietnam which was under USA's protection. USA suffered heavy losses and ultimately left defeated. The credit goes rightly to the hardy determined and poorly armed North vietnamese and Vietcong (South Vietnamese Communist guerrillas.
