For making sfx which are movie grade, kolly, bolly or holly, u need a good 3d terrain prog, like maya, and a 3d studio like 3dMax. To get an animation of say- a large city or a large crowd , or those "dazzle" u also need 3d Character Studio. Then you'd also need "patcware" (something which puts it all together) like adobe premiere, or something more industry specific (google them).

FOr Jurassic Park, you need a full blown custom made 3d terrainscape / animation software, that is very high end, but for k/k, you can get by w/ what i said i think.
