Yes it was a very good movie got DEV Anand filmfare for best actor. The film is based on A.J. Cronin's 1953 novel, Beyond This Place,
Most of the films whic r written today r copy from hollywood or other cinema. Since thi s was adapted from a book it had a great screenplay. (I wish more novels r adapted to make hindi films).
And off course the great score by S.D. Burman. My memory of Kala Paani is Rafi's great solo HUM BEKHUDI ME TUMKO PUKARE CHALE GAYE. This song turned me into Rafi fan.
Yes there are meaningful movies still made today but honestly how many of us really watch them??

In times of today, those sensitivities cant be recreated...cause those sensitivities dont exist.
Movie making, story telling was an art, just like a sculpture, painting, poem and such fine arts. The technical aspects were of no importance, cause the richness lay in the way the subject, the theme was handled, and the characters developed.
There are a lot of contemporary directors who are making sensitive and meaningful cinema, though not necessarily beautiful.
yet,the same kind of subtle nuances and emotions, just cant be recreated...the art is gone, along with the artists.
The new age sensibilities,is all about the obvious, the 'in the face' kind of depictions.
Though,we recently had a movie called NEWYORK,directed by KABIR KHAN,which dealt with almost the same theme, though with different storyline and objective....it did touch a cord...but not the same way...definitely!!
Those classics need to be treated as reference material, for the new age story tellers to learn a lesson or two,and hone t ...more

Comrade, they did. It was a docu-drama in 2007 in Orissa..forgot the exact title sorry bud, but it was an indie film. It was about a man who was arrested for suspected burglary in the 60s and got released in 2007. His name was cleared even 4 months after his "holdup" by police, but they just apparently "forgot" about him....a High Court Judge noticed & ordered his release....

Based on A.J.Cronin's 'Beyond This Place', this movie narrates the story of an untiring crusade for justice... !
A young man, learning about his father's wrongful implication in a fifteen-year-old murder, vows to bring the true criminals to justice and release his innocent father from 'kaala paani' (life imprisonment), for which he enlists the help of a press reporter, a retired police inspector and an unwitting prostitute who happens to possess some key evidence.!! She had decided to not have anything to do with him when she found out that he was having an affair with Mala. Karan wants to see his father, and accordingly travels to Hyderabad, meets his father, who convince ...more

This is what day and night it is happening. Now a days it only because poor reporting by the police misrepresentation before the courts and in accordance with the whims and fancy of the judge: In a nutshell it is our weak judiciary system or the wry way o flooking at it,

It was a really good movie, and it is not easy to make such films now as they do not run, in the theatres, it runs only where there are stunts and entertainment
